New TV & Movies Arriving August 15-21

It’s time for some basket stories at Hulu.

On Monday, Aug. 15, the streaming service will release Legacy: The True Story Of The L.A. Lakers. It features interviews with famous L.A. Lakers players, including Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’ Neal, and LeBron James, as well as other figures within the world of basketball.

“The docuseries captures the remarkable rise and unprecedented success of one of the most dominant and iconic franchises in professional sports,” reads the synopsis. “When charismatic real estate tycoon Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the Los Angeles Lakers in a wildly risky and complex business deal, nobody could’ve predicted just how much success was to come. Kicking off the ‘Showtime’ era in 1979, the notorious L.A.-playboy pioneered the business of basketball. He raised the price of floor seats, introduced dancers and a live band, opened an exclusive private club inside the arena, and cultivated famous fans in Hollywood. Over the last 40 years, the team captured 11 titles and retired the jerseys of some of the NBA’s most legendary players.

Today, Dr. Buss’ empire is now worth more than $5 billion. But all of that success did not come easy. Along with notorious feuds, career-ending illnesses, and a bevy of insurmountable on-court obstacles, the Lakers have also weathered intense drama off the court – within Dr. Buss’s own family. Running the franchise as a ‘mom and pop’ operation, Dr. Buss gave his children front office jobs with the understanding they would, someday, inherit his kingdom. But sibling rivalry, interpersonal conflict, and corporate unrest threatened to destroy everything Dr. Buss worked so hard to build. Ultimately, Legacy: The True Story of the L.A. Lakers is about family, business, and power -and how all three must be harnessed to achieve greatness.”

Kevin Bacon Reveals Why He Keeps Coming Back to Horror

During an interview with ComingSoon, They/Them star Kevin Bacon discussed his history with horror films and why the genre is so exciting for him.

RELATED: They/Them Interview: Kevin Bacon & Carrie Preston Discuss Unique Slasher

When asked about his long relationship with the horror genre and They/Them, Bacon talked about the unique setting and high stakes:

I love horror because horror has very, very high stakes. It’s life and death, and that’s good stuff to act,” Bacon said. “John could have made a movie that was about gay conversion. It could have been a dark little indie sort of drama, but to his credit, he realized that horror is a genre that has the possibility of reaching a lot of people. We see that all the time when things come out of the gate and have a very widespread appeal. So to take this background, this terrible idea, this horror in itself of gay conversion, and then plug it into a very traditional structure, for us — a 70s camp slasher movie — was, I thought, a super brilliant idea.”

Bacon also spoke more specifically about his character from They/Them, the charmingly menacing Owen Whistler:

“To his [John Logan, director of They/Them] credit, he wrote a guy that was not a cookie cutter, crew cut, flag-wearing, right-wing or religious nut, you know? He wanted to soften the edges of this character and make him a little bit more of a Dead fan or something and make him feel as reasonable as possible,” Bacon explained. “I think that when you set that up, then there’s room to really shock people in a way that happens later on in the film, obviously.”

“Kevin Bacon plays Owen Whistler in this slasher horror film set at an LGBTQIA+ conversion camp,” says the synopsis. “Several queer and trans campers join Whistler for a week of programming intended to “help them find a new sense of freedom”. As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. When a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous.”

The Good Neighbor Director & Co-Writer Stephan Rick

ComingSoon’s Jeff Ames recently spoke with director and co-writer Stephan Rick about his film The Good Neighbor.

“A nightmarish evening unfolds for neighbors David (Luke Kleintank) and Robert (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) when they accidentally hit a woman on her bike and flee the scene,” says the synopsis. “While David is increasingly plagued by feelings of guilt, Robert shows no remorse and becomes overbearing and possessive.”

The Good Neighbor is available to stream now. Watch it on Prime Video or Redbox. on your Roku device.

Jeff Ames: What led you to become a director/writer?

Stephan Rick: There was a very specific moment in my life: As a 6-year old my dad took me to see Disney’s Snow White at the local movie theater. But while we were standing in line to be let in, I heard loud booming sounds and sneaked in the theater next to us. The sounds came from the big fight on planet Hoth in the opening sequence of The Empire Strikes Back. My six-year-old self was just blown away. I later begged my father to let me watch the whole movie. That day left such a huge impression on me, that I wanted to know everything about movie-making. And that led to everything else.

Were there specific individuals in the field who influenced your style?

There are many great filmmakers that inspired me. In particular, I always admired François Truffaut and Michael Haneke in regards to their ‘objective’ directing style, meaning the camera is more observing and less interacting, giving the actors as well as the audience space to explore.

How has your technique/style evolved over the years?

I think that style is something that is ever-evolving and changing. At the beginning of my career, I was shooting a lot of material, trying to figure things out. The more experience I gained, the clearer I knew which shots I really needed.

How did the story behind The Good Neighbor come about?

I always loved the idea that neighbors sometimes know more about your life than your own family. They see who’s going in and out of your house, they might hear your fights, they are physically close to you. I was still at film school when I saw a shadow behind the window across the street. Constantly looking into my direction. Was my neighbor watching me, the whole time from his room? I wondered what his motivation was, and if he wanted to be my friend. Later it turned out that it was just a basketball sitting in a shelf, that looked like a person’s head behind the curtain in a certain light. So basically, it was my own paranoia that led me to make this film.

What was the most challenging aspect of The Good Neighbor and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was that this film is a remake of my first feature film Unter Nachbarn which came out in 2011. While I wanted to be true to the original material, I needed to find a fresh angle to make it interesting for me as a director. In this case, Robert, the antagonist changed very much from the Robert in the original film. In the original film, he’s like a toddler, that step by step becomes more and more unhinged. In the 2021 version, he is a much more calculating grown-up.

Do you have any fun, behind-the-scenes stories about the making of The Good Neighbor that you can share?

Jonathan Rhys Meyers had to learn Latvian for the role. He spoke it so well, that some of the extras thought he was Latvian!

What was your collaboration with the main cast like? What made you decide on Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Luke Kleintank, Eloise Smyth and Bruce Davison for their respective role?

What I love about Jonathan is that he’s not afraid to go to his darker side and bring it to life for a character. Luke is a guy that you immediately like, but the way he approaches David is interesting and ambiguous, so that viewers are constantly torn between rooting for him and being appalled by what he does next. They both have their very own way of approaching a character but they had a lot of respect for each others’ methods. Eloise fit perfectly in that mix. She brings a special quality to the Vanessa character: surrounded by toxic men she is always determined and powerful in all her grief.

And Bruce Davison is just a legend, that I always wanted to work with! I was very lucky that he read the script and was immediately on board.

Were there things you learned from working on The Good Neighbor that you’re excited to apply to future projects?

I’ve been wanting to make this remake for a very long time. Multiple times we almost got financed and then everything fell apart. So, the lesson is: No matter how many times you fall, get back up again!

Do you have any other projects coming up that you can share with us?

I am currently working on a very exciting German 6-part mini-series called The Root of all Evil which is a crime show that is in the spirit of shows like The Killing and True Detective. It deals with a horrendous crime right after the Berlin wall fell in the early nineties. An East-German detective and her West-German counterpart have to work together to solve the murder of a child.

Sony Shot Kraven the Hunter Entirely on Location

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to star in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film based on the Marvel comics character. Unlike other Marvel projects, however, the upcoming film was shot entirely on location, something that Taylor-Johnson says will only help the film.

RELATED: Kraven The Hunter Set Photos Show Aaron Taylor-Johnson Wearing Signature Necklace

Kraven being shot entirely on location is going to make all the difference,” said Taylor-Johnson in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s going to add something really beautiful to our personal story. It also sets Kraven apart from that Marvel stage look. It’s important for this character to be in the real world. It’s important for the authenticity of the story. When you’re running on streets barefoot, you take in those elements and play within that.”

While not too much is still known about the upcoming film, production on the project has concluded, with Taylor-Johnson stating earlier in June that he had finished filming. Footage of the film has yet to make its way online, with the only footage shown so far being a small piece of footage that Sony debuted at CinemaCon in April 2022.

Joining Taylor-Johnson is Fred Hechinger (Fear Street Trilogy, The White Lotus) as Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother; Oscar nominee Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Calypso, the occasion partner and lover of Kraven; and Russell Crowe in an undisclosed role.

Kraven the Hunter will be directed by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) from a screenplay co-written by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer films), Matt Holloway, and Art Marcum. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are attached to produce the project.

The film is scheduled to be released on January 13, 2023.

Morty Multiversus Release Date Set for This Month

Just a week after delaying the start of Multiversus’ Season 1, it looks like the game is ready to debut it to fans after all, as Player First Games has confirmed Season 1 will debut on August 15, 2022, with Morty from Rick and Morty set to arrive a week later.

RELATED: MultiVersus’ Rick & Morty DLC Delayed, Will Be ‘Unaffected’ by Warner Bros. Merger

Season 1 of Multiversus is set to kick off on Tuesday, and will include a brand-new Battle Pass for players to pick up and begin leveling up in order to earn in-game awards. About a week later, on August 23, 2022, Morty will finally join the roster of playable characters, marking the first playable character from the hit television series Rick and Morty. Rick Sanchez will also be available in Season 1 of Multiversus, but Player First has not confirmed exactly when the character will arrive.

While not too much of Morty’s gameplay style is known, Player First Games did detail a bit of what to expect from the character earlier this month. The character will mostly use projectiles and counters and can “whip himself at opponents,” which could result in some big hits when an opponent has enough damage taken to send them flying off of the map. Gameplay of Rick leaked online earlier in the month, however, showing the scientist shooting and kicking on the upcoming Rick and Morty stage from the series’ infamous “Get Schwifty” episode.

RELATED: MultiVersus Roster Adds LeBron James, Rick, and Morty

It’s also not clear if Justin Roiland will be providing the voices for both characters. The game already has some bits of Rick and Morty in it, as Meeseeks characters also appear in the game’s tutorials as targets for players to train against. The new combatant coming to the platform fighter corroborates a list of leaked characters that appeared last month, which included some wild names like The Hound and Daenerys from Game of Thrones, as well as Ted Lasso from Apple TV+’s hit series. While it’s unclear if all of these characters will make their way into the title, MultiVersus does seem to be pulling from a wide variety of places to ensure it has an incredibly diverse roster.

Better Call Saul Finale Release Date & Time on Streaming

The Better Call Saul finale release date is upon us.

Over seven years, fans saw Jimmy McGill changing many identities throughout the Better Call Saul seasons, but his adventures have finally reached the end of the road. Either as Jimmy or Saul Goodman or Gene Takovic, Bob Odenkirk’s iconic character could not stay away from trouble. Let’s say it, he didn’t mind going down the road to perdition. In fact, Jimmy enjoyed it. But it all be over soon.

When to Watch the Better Call Saul Finale

The Better Call Saul finale will air on AMC and AMC+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Monday, Aug. 15. Directed and written by Peter Gould, the episode is called “Saul Gone” and will run for 65 minutes without commercials. It will be the longest episode in the Breaking Bad universe. Better Call Saul Season 6 comes to an end following the upcoming episode 13. Overall, the series wraps up after 63 installments.

Apparently, Gould and Vince Gilligan are no longer interested in expanding the Breaking Bad universe. It means that fans will see Odenkirk as Jimmy for the last time. The same goes for Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, who is attached to appear once again during the grand finale. Additionally, Rhea Seehorn’s Kim Wexler, Tony Dalton’s Lalo, and Jonathan Banks’ Mike Ehrmantraut will be gone too.

RELATED: Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 12 Recap, Theories, and Thoughts

“The final season concludes the complicated journey and transformation of its compromised hero, Jimmy McGill, into criminal lawyer Saul Goodman,” reads the synopsis. “From the cartel to the courthouse, from Albuquerque to Omaha, season six tracks Jimmy, Saul, and Gene as well as Jimmy’s complex relationship with Kim, who is in the midst of her own existential crisis. Meanwhile, Mike, Gus, Nacho, and Lalo are locked into a game of cat and mouse with mortal stakes.”

Gould and Gilligan also serve as executive producers along with Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein, Thomas Schnauz, and Gennifer Hutchison.

Red Passes Impressive Box Office Milestone in Japan

One Piece Film: Red recently premiered in Japan, and the film’s debut was every bit as successful as anticipated.

RELATED: One Piece Film: Red Getting Tie-In Anime Episodes

Through its first week of being out in Japanese theaters, One Piece Film: Red has already earned over 5 billion yen (~$37 million) according to an announcement from the staff of the film during an event at a screening in Tokyo’s Marunouchi Toei theater (via Anime News Network). This follows the massive trend of the film’s opening weekend, which saw the movie selling 1.58 million tickets for 2.254 billion yen (~$16.7 million), putting it at the top of the Japanese box office.

One Piece Film: Red is already outpacing its predecessor, One Piece Stampede, as the film has earned 78% more in its first two days than Stampede did in its first three days, even with One Piece Film: Red opening a day later than Stampede did.

“Uta — the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as ‘otherworldly,’” reads the official synopsis for the film. “Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans — excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance — the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.”
